Pre-workout is the most hyped, most over-marketed shelf in the supplement store. Flashy tubs, names like "MEGA-DEATH PUMP," and a tingle that makes you feel like it's "working." Here's the truth: most of that tingle is just one cheap ingredient, and half the tub is filler hiding behind a "proprietary blend."

You don't need to be a chemist. You need to know the 4 things that actually matter and how to avoid getting ripped off.

👻 "Pre-workout doesn't build muscle. It gets you to the gym on the day you'd skip. That's worth something — but only if you're not overpaying for fairy dust."

What's actually in pre-workout (the 4 that matter)

That's basically it. Everything else is usually there to make the label look impressive.

The #1 red flag: "proprietary blend"

If the label says "Proprietary Blend — 6,000mg" and lists 10 ingredients without individual doses, walk away. It means they can put 5,990mg of cheap filler and a sprinkle of the good stuff. Brands that actually work for you tell you exactly how much of each ingredient you're getting.

How to pick one (the 30-second checklist)

Our pick: Transparent Labs BULK — every dose fully listed on the label (no hidden blends), sensible caffeine, real citrulline. It's literally the "no-hype" example we just described. → Check the price on Amazon ↗

Do you even need it?

Honestly? No. A cup of coffee (~100mg caffeine) before training does most of the job for pennies. Pre-workout earns its place if (a) you like the ritual, (b) you want the citrulline pump, or (c) the flavor + routine is what gets you out the door on a tired day. That last one is the real value — anything that makes you show up is worth it.

Don't: slam a double scoop at 8pm and wonder why you can't sleep. Don't: rely on it to fix bad sleep or no food. It's a nudge, not a foundation.
