Pre-Workout 101: How to Pick One That's Worth It
Pre-workout is the most hyped, most over-marketed shelf in the supplement store. Flashy tubs, names like "MEGA-DEATH PUMP," and a tingle that makes you feel like it's "working." Here's the truth: most of that tingle is just one cheap ingredient, and half the tub is filler hiding behind a "proprietary blend."
You don't need to be a chemist. You need to know the 4 things that actually matter and how to avoid getting ripped off.
What's actually in pre-workout (the 4 that matter)
- Caffeine — the real engine. Boosts energy, focus, and performance. ~150–250mg is plenty. More isn't better; it's just jittery.
- L-Citrulline — the "pump" ingredient. Helps blood flow. Look for ~6g (citrulline malate ~8g).
- Beta-Alanine — causes that harmless skin tingle. Helps muscular endurance over time. ~3.2g.
- Creatine — sometimes included (great), but you can just take it separately.
That's basically it. Everything else is usually there to make the label look impressive.
The #1 red flag: "proprietary blend"
If the label says "Proprietary Blend — 6,000mg" and lists 10 ingredients without individual doses, walk away. It means they can put 5,990mg of cheap filler and a sprinkle of the good stuff. Brands that actually work for you tell you exactly how much of each ingredient you're getting.
How to pick one (the 30-second checklist)
- ✅ Fully disclosed doses (no proprietary blends)
- ✅ Caffeine in the 150–250mg range
- ✅ Real doses of citrulline + beta-alanine
- ❌ No 400mg caffeine "hardcore" bombs unless you know your tolerance
Do you even need it?
Honestly? No. A cup of coffee (~100mg caffeine) before training does most of the job for pennies. Pre-workout earns its place if (a) you like the ritual, (b) you want the citrulline pump, or (c) the flavor + routine is what gets you out the door on a tired day. That last one is the real value — anything that makes you show up is worth it.
Don't: slam a double scoop at 8pm and wonder why you can't sleep. Don't: rely on it to fix bad sleep or no food. It's a nudge, not a foundation.
